Poor maternal mental health afflicts huge amounts of women worldwide, negatively impacting their life, their children’s lives, and their communities. Nowhere is this burden more pronounced or more seriously neglected than in the Global South. 


Many low and middle income countries have less than one mental health professional per 100,000 people. In order to overcome this hurdle, the use of “lay practitioners” is essential to reach a large amount of sufferers.

1 in 100 deaths globally are attributed to suicide, the majority of these in low and middle income countries. While data still needs to be gathered for many geographies, effective interventions do exist to combat the global scourge of suicide.

Interventions such as guided self-help promise the potential to help massive numbers of individuals for little monetary inputs. While skepticism is required to properly assess the quality of new app, there is a huge potential for these services.

New research is needed on the burden of mental illness, the efficacy of new and existing treatments, and the best philanthropic and policy levers to pull for maximum impact. We support projects with a variety of impactful research agendas.
